Pursuit 2007
Written by Staff
For the third straight year, Winnipeg Men magazine organized and hosted Pursuit—The Search for Automotive Excellence. What might seem like a weekend of cruising around in luxury autos with a bunch of guys, is really a chance for us to test out the latest car breeds and brands. We then pass our reviews on to you, our readers. Our hope is that this insight helps you make an informed decision when you’re buying your car at a local dealer.

For this year’s event, we decided to involve the people who truly provide most of the input when buying a vehicle for everyday use. Whether you guys are searching for a sedan for commuting or a large SUV for those treks to the lake with the kids, we all know that the women in our lives provide us with helpful information and more often than not, a little slap of reality in terms of what we actually need. With this in mind, we created the First Annual Couples Pursuit.

With the objective of providing readers with comprehensive insight into vehicles, we also wanted to make sure we covered the gamut of choices. This year we brought along—thanks to 10 generous dealers—a complete range of vehicles that covered everything from the brand new BMW 3-Series hardtop Cabriolet to a full size Chevrolet Tahoe. This ensured that every category was represented. You can check out the category chart on page 9 to see the vehicles we drove over the weekend, as well as what makes and models are a comparable drive in each category.

We hope that you enjoy the commentary on this year’s event. Of course, if you feel that you could have done a better job (or just think that you should have been one of the drivers) make sure you go to our websites (winnipegmen.com and winnipegwomen.net), click on the Pursuit link and send us the reason you think you are qualified to be a part of the 2008 Pursuit drive event. We have already planned out the route and trust us, you will want to be there!

I want to thank all of the 226 entrants we had for this year’s event, and apologize to those who sent in great entries and were not selected. Please hit resend for 2008. I also want to thank the nine couples who joined us this year. The weekend was full of great memories and lots of laughs.

Winnipeg Men and Winnipeg Women magazines would like to thank the Mooswa Resort for supplying us with fantastic accommodations in Clear Lake, as well as T.R. McCoys, not only for the great food, but for providing us with a venue for an evening of great conversation. If you want to get out of town for a weekend or week, these are the places you want to make sure you contact.

P.S. For those entrants who recognize Rennie Zegalski from our second Pursuit, we owed either Rennie or Bruce Hancock an apology for mixing up their names—so we flipped a coin and…

Ladies, I’m not sure about you, but I was getting a little tired of hearing about this group of guys who take off for a weekend to drive around in great cars and then come home to say how fun it was. Two years in a row was enough! Prior to this year’s event being planned, I suggested that maybe the half of the couple that actually thinks more about how to use the vehicle everyday, as opposed to how fast we can get from stop light to stop light and how loud the stereo is, should be involved. Besides, I really wanted to go!

I want to let you know that the drive itself was a classic spousal experience. Within 15 minutes of leaving the city, Glenn was positive that I had missed a turn and felt the need to inform me, quite passionately, of this fact. Turns out he was wrong (hmmmmmm… have we heard this before?) and it also turns out that I was not the only spouse with driver’s seat envy going on in the vehicle!

We ladies managed to represent the female sex very well and I hope we have provided pertinent information that you can use the next time your husband decides it is time for a two door convertible sports car to take all three kids camping (we are not sure how they justify this). Enjoy the article and I hope to see you next year because I am not giving up the driver’s seat and you are all invited.
