PEARTING WITH CLOTHING ISN'T ALWAYS EASY, BUT IT'S OFTEN NECESSARY.
It’s amazing how much clothing a person can accumulate and never actually wear. Having just dropped off two, 50-lb containers of jeans, T-shirts and shoes at the Union Gospel Mission, I am, in fact, a little bothered by my propensity to cling to that which I clearly shouldn’t have bought in the first place. |

The last issue of Winnipeg Men saw the owners of four leading menswear stores questioned about style. Two things stand out from their answers. First, that style transcends fashion, meaning that style is your unique personality expressed in what you wear, drive, watch, listen to or spend time doing. Simply, it’s the sum of many parts. Second, unlike style, which tends to remain constant, fashion changes all the time, turning those who don’t understand the difference into broke, insecure wrecks with silly, product-filled mops and $300 skinny jeans that don’t suit them.

With wedding invitations piling up and a new job requiring that I work in something other than a pair of boxer shorts and a hoodie, I was forced recently to shop for a suit. While I’d like to report that the process was a breeze and that my being somewhat knowledgeable in matters of urban fashion was helpful, I cannot. Rather, I ended up wandering aimlessly through the aisles of countless stores, muttering to myself about pleats and cuffs and debating whether ’tis nobler for a man to match his socks with his pants or his shoes. |

Up until a few years ago, I didn’t give much thought to T-shirts. I had drawers full of white crew- and V-necks, all purchased in three packs from big box stores and easily replaced when the pits began to yellow, but my money was reserved for jeans and shoes. Those, my brothers, were the items that mattered. |
