Perspective
Written by Glenn Tinley

glenn tinleyWell gentlemen, here we are again, nearing the end of another year. If only I had time to reflect.

We have nothing short of a jam-packed issue of Winnipeg Men for your perusal, filled with ideas on everything from style to holiday gifts. Our gift guide this year is a full 10-pages and is meant to give you a few shopping ideas (especially for those under four feet).

Take a look, and if nothing else, circle a couple items with a “this would be good” note scribbled next to it for your significant other to see. For our fashion feature this issue, we decided to tackle that important question: What is style? For answers we went straight to the experts, the owners of four leading Winnipeg menswear stores. Their answer: That style is about how you feel, about what you wear and how you wear it. Don’t just buy what is on the mannequin, they suggest, but develop your own style. This leads us to our newest, and biggest, contest: the search for Winnipeg’s Best Dressed Men. The entries so far have been interesting and diverse, but we know there are more of you out there. Make sure you get your entry in, and ladies—you know your man has a great sense of fashion so tell us about it. Go to www.winnipegmen.com to download your entry form.

Lastly, we have all heard and read about the rise in the dollar in the past few months. We have also heard and read about the line-ups at the border to get into the U.S. to buy stuff. I know that going to Grand Forks for a shopping trip is tempting when you hear all of the stories about savings. Far be it from me to simply say don’t go, but just remember that every dollar spent in the U.S. stays there. It does not circulate here, where it supports our local companies and their employees (our neighbours), raises money for charities, and keeps Manitoba moving. I completely understand the desire to save money, and to get away for the weekend, but supporting our local businesses is also important.
