U-Boat Watches

New to Dimitra’s Jewellers is the U-Boat line of watches. The line has a long history, having been designed in 1942 by the Fontana workshop for the distinguished officers of the Italian Navy’s submarines (also known as U-boats). Though the project was ultimately scrapped, the distinctive drawings, colour samples and original materials were lovingly preserved for more than 60 years. In 2000, Italo Fontana, a cousin of the workshop’s late founder, realized a longtime company dream by producing the line. For more information visit Dimitra’s Jewellers at 1700 Corydon Ave.

Panamera Launch

Once again Auto Haus Porsche out did themselves with their introduction of the all new four-door Panamera. The event was reminiscent of a Hollywood production with a light show and huge video screens. They also combined the elegance of this new model with the latest fashions from Hugo Boss, a new Tag watch worth over $100,000, the finest Tolaini wines and, of course, a collection of private jets—just to compliment the dream world.

Special Olympics

The annual Special Olympics Festival fundraiser for Special Olympics Manitoba took place at the Delta Winnipeg on Thursday November 12, and had over 300 people in attendance. The event auctions this year alone raised over $60,000 and included Studio Publications’ Dish Magazine’s donation of a ‘Pantry Raid’ webisode featuring chef Rob Thomas, which raised $1,600! A combined investment of up to $5 million by the governments of Canada and Manitoba in 12 new innovative galleries at the Manitoba Children’s Museum will present a world of experiences, featuring leading-edge technology, that entertain as they educate. The museum plans to renew its current gallery and add a 3,500 square foot welcome centre to its current location at The Forks. The remainder of the overall project costs of $9.5 million is being provided through museum donations and fundraising activities.

Why drive, when you can fly?

And the winner is...
Luc Therrien was the lucky recipient of the Manitoba Moose tickets with his summer sob story:

I had an unfortunate event happen to my pop up trailer that ruined my summer’s worth of camping.

My camper was stored on my brother’s farm yard. When I picked up my camper this summer to go camping, I noticed that the tarp that covered it was all scratched up and ripped in spots. After removing the tarp, I noticed approximately 50 to 60 deep gouges and holes in a few spots on the aluminum roof of the pop up. After examing the trailer closely and discussing the possible cause of these gouges, I discovered that my brother had left his horses to graze in and around the yard. The gouges and teeth marks on the roof of the trailer led us to believe that the horses were the culprits of the damage. We suspect that the smell of the moth ball that I had left inside and around the trailer to fend off mice (who apparently do not like the smell) attacted the horses. They used their teeth to gouge and bite into the trailer roof.

I put a claim into Autopac and after having the estimators chuckle and laugh, they wrote the trailer off. Because there was no structural damage to the trailer (just what they considered vandalism and which I repaired with caulking), I was able to buy back my trailer from Autopac and continue to use it--gouges and all. It made for a disappointing summer as far as camping goes. I must say though that the story is a campfire highlight and to anyone else I’ve told it to.
