By now we are all aware of the negative health and eventual physical effects of sun worshiping, (mmm...crepe-y skin) so for this issue our semi-professional testers gave us the dish on the modern self-tanner.
Subject: Jerry G Occupation: Entrepreneur Product: Life Brand Self-Tan Towelette Price: $2.29 each, Shopper’s Drug Mart Have you ever used a self-tanner? Not knowingly.
Did you use it in the morning or at night? I used it at noon, and a few times in the afternoon. Was this wrong?
How easy was the application? It was like using a wet-nap.
How was the product’s smell? Like a fancy wet-nap.
How did it make your skin feel? Like I just used a wet-nap on my legs. It was a bit cold at first, but after it dried it was okay.
Did you notice any results? I sure did.
How would you describe the results? Like a giant carrot-coloured bruise.
Any feedback? Mostly–“Oh my God, did you have another biking accident?!”
Would you use this product again? On some of my friends, yes. And maybe to garner sympathy.
Would you use any self-tanning product again? Only if someone markets the sun.
Any additional comments? This is perfect for those who use wet-naps on a regular basis, and have the time to unfold a stamp-sized napkin into an 8 ½” by 11“ sheet. It can be carried easily in a lady (or man) purse, or can be a great addition to any first aid kit–for emergencies requiring a warm, sun-kissed glow. Subject: Jeff M Occupation: Sales Consultant Product: Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer Price: $5.99 for 150 ml Have you ever used a self-tanner? Please…
Before you started using it, did you think you would like this product? It looked like something my mother would have in her medicine cabinet!
When did you use it? In the morning–after shaving.
How easy was the application? It was easy to apply, but I wasn’t sure how much to use.
How was the product’s smell? Not good–quite chemically.
How did it make your skin feel? It felt okay, but the singed smell made me think my skin was burning!
Did you notice any results? After a couple of days, yes, but I didn’t get as tanned as I’d anticipated.
Any feedback on your sun-kissed glow? I was just at a sales training conference and one person mentioned that I looked tanned…a guy. So not the reaction I wanted.
Would you use this product again? NO.
Would you use any self-tanning product again? I would, but not my grandmother’s self-tanner. It was a little embarrassing to have it in my shaving kit. I would want something a little more manly, preferably with an SPF as well. Subject: Kyle D Occupation: Graphic Designer Product: Coppertone Continuous Spray Moisture Mist Sunless Tanning Price: $8.99 for 266 ml
Before you started using it, did you think you would like this product? I was pretty skeptical from the get go. I did like the idea it was a spray so at least it would go on evenly.
When did you use it? At night, because if I was going to end up looking like a 6’3” Oompa Loompa I’d rather have time to call in sick for the next few days.
How was the product’s smell? Great if you like getting high off aerosol fumes. It’s pretty much hairspray as far as that goes. I suggest applying this outside. I made the bad call of applying it in my five foot square bathroom. Strangely, it got more fun as time went on…go figure.
How would you describe the results? Very subtle. Doing numerous coats works, but who has time for that. So go with the darker spray available unless you have the complexion of Conan O’Brien.
Would you use any self-tanning product again? Maybe. They used to scare me when you’d see those tangerine people walking around looking ridiculous, but they’ve come along way. I’m still not sure what’s worse–looking like an orange or a piece of fried chicken?
