Local companies see the benefit in keeping employees healthy. If you’re an informed and somewhat aware Canadian born within the last 50 years (and if our demographics hold, you are) then you are well aware that physical fitness is a key component to a healthy, productive life. Whether we heard it from Ed Allen, Participaction, or Hal and Joanne, the need to get, and stay, in shape has been drummed into the baby boomer psyche for as long as we can remember. Aside from reducing the risks of any number of potentially lethal maladies, fitness would also improve our moods, give us boundless energy, improve our sex lives, etc. Who wouldn’t want to be fit? |

After a much-publicized doctor drain, Winnipeg’s operating rooms are once again alive with a new crop of doctors. Among them is Dr. Ed Buchel, a Winnipeg-raised Arizona import who is proving that medicine in Winnipeg can attract—and keep—the country’s top docs. Dr. Ed Buchel, one of the foremost plastic surgeons in North America, is driving home from the so-called “Disneyland for Doctors” in Arizona—the Mayo Clinic’s satellite medical centre in Scottsdale—after career stops in New York City and “Mother Mayo” in Minnesota, where he trained his hands to do microsurgery that would give you a headache just to think about. As he pulls into the driveway of his mountaintop home on an acre of land overlooking the city of Phoenix—with a lap pool in the yard, a quarter acre of land on one side filled with fruit trees, and a basketball court on the other—he knows he’s living the dream. Forgive him if the first thought on his mind is not moving north to Winnipeg. |

As far back as I can remember hockey has been my single biggest passion. In fact I’ve held a stick in my hands more than I have just about any other, um, device. I’ve had a few championship successes but also a number of defeats. I’ve scored highlight reel-worthy goals and enough blooper plays to fill a compilation DVD. More than anything, I’ve enjoyed the rush of wind in my hair as I run down the rink to either lock in on an opposing goal or defend my own. |

On the Water with Manitoba’s Gimli-Based Coast Guard Crew A big three-seater Zodiac parked on a trailer out front makes the Coast Guard search and rescue station in Gimli hard to miss. At the station, John Bartley, Ryan Isfjord and Brian Sparks alternate all summer on a 14-day shift with another three-person team. While on duty, they share a house that doubles as the local headquarters. Inside, next to the television, a night vision headset sits on top of a bookcase full of safe boating guides. |

Some pro golfers are known for their style (sorry Tiger), like the dapper Jesper Parnevik, the bold and sporty Alex Cejka, and the classically styled Colin Montgomerie. It’s no surprise, then, that they are sponsored by fashionable labels like J. Lindeberg, Alberto and Lacoste. Although examples of fitted trousers, slim polos and classic V-neck sweaters can be found at some major golf retailers, a few locally owned menswear stores have stepped up to the fashion plate by carrying many sleek European and U.K. lines. |

Three steps to buying a boat this summer BEST BOWRIDER VALUE —According to Boating Life Magazine Sea Ray 210 Select (searay.com) This 21-footer just begs for a group of friends and a day on the water with one of the best seating configurations to be found anywhere. The standard equipment includes a 5.0 litre (260hp) Mercury I/O engine that will skim you across the waves at 70–80 km/h. Other standout features include a molded swim platform—an outgrowth of the hull and deck which transitions to an ingenious aft-facing lounger on the sun deck. Similar boats are often priced in the premium $55,000 range, but Sea Ray has kept the sticker significantly lower for this model. |

Want to challenge yourself and take on the forces of nature? Consider taking up kayaking this summer. Mick Lautt, nationally certified instructor and owner of WAVpaddling Central Canada’s Kayaking School, has been active in the kayaking community (provincially and nationally) for more than a decade.
