As the “Prince of Pop” – blurring the line between “high” and “low” art—the incomparable Andy Warhol helped define contemporary culture. Warhol’s prediction that “everyone will be famous for 15 minutes” has not only proved remarkably prescient, the very phrase itself has entered into everyday usage. Consequently, Warhol himself remains perhaps as famous now as ever.
Warhol: Larger than Life, a major retrospective showing at the Winnipeg Art Gallery from October 5 to January 8, 2008, will in part present a uniquely Canadian side of Warhol’s career: in addition to his iconic Marilyn Monroe prints, the collection also includes portraits of Canadian icons such as Wayne Gretzky and Karen Kain.
