By the time you read this, the boys of summer will be in full swing—the Winnipeg Goldeyes are off to a good start and seem to be once again a force to be reckoned with. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are in the midst of change. Everything from the coach to the quarterback to the front lines, and we are looking forward to a turnaround season. Both Kevin West and Doug Brown have been entertaining fans with great plays and we felt it was time to get a closer look at them.
At the time I write this, we have another group of boys of summer that is not always expected, but always hoped for. The Manitoba Moose are in the middle of the Calder Cup finals and could potentially be bringing us an ice-based championship for the first time in over 30 years. I think that we need to give a collective cheer to Mark Chipman and his entire team at True North. Not only did Mr. Chipman do what many said was not possible, bring us a downtown arena, but he has also given us hockey in June—something every hockey fan dreams of. I tip my foam Moose antlers to Mark and hope that as you read this, we are celebrating with the Calder Cup. Every hockey fan in this city deserves it.
If you want to get an idea of how these athletes stay fit to play, you can see the trainers of each of our professional sports teams to put me through the paces. Each of them will take me through a typical workout for the team with me, which will be captured on video, so you get a true sense of the workout. We will also ask each of them to give some take-away exercises for you. Check out winnipegmen.com to see if
I survive.
The Summer issue of Winnipeg Men Magazine is one of my favorites—not only because it is our Pursuit issue where we recap our weekend driving event which is always great fun, but also because I can flip this issue over and read about the winners of our Winnipeg’s Most Beautiful Women contest. Each year we ask readers to nominate a woman in their life who makes an impact on their family, work and community. We get an amazing amount of nominations, from which an independent panel choose the five “winners”. Their stories are told in the magazine, but the real story is in meeting these women. They are truly amazing. You can get a little sense of their personalities by watching the behind-the-scenes video from our cover photo shoot at winnipegwomen.net.
We have switched our business coverage to our newest publication, Marketplace Magazine, that was recently launched with Jim Balsillie on the cover. Despite this, I’d like to mention here something that affects us all—taxes. David Asper gave a speech at a Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce lunch that really got people talking. If you have only heard snippets in local media coverage, and you want to hear the entire story, go to our website to view the entire speech for yourself on our exclusive video. I welcome your thoughts on what Mr. Asper had to say.
