Mr. Pollard (as I respectfully acknowledge him), is one of those people who immediately puts you at ease, it was almost like I was conversing with my grandpa (rest his soul). He not only listened and paid attention to what I was saying, but the next time I saw him he followed-up on that conversation with interest. Genuine is what I call people like Mr. Pollard. Genuine in his work, about his family and in his efforts for our community. No big ego or WIFM (what’s in it for me) attitude. Just hard work, an eye for business and a genuinely nice guy. I am lucky to get to meet some of the amazing men who grace the covers of Winnipeg Men Magazine, but Mr. Pollard’s will hold a special spot on my wall.

Last issue, I wrote about some of the issues going on in the economy. Things have definitely taken an interesting curve, although we seem to be avoiding most of the mess here in Manitoba. For all the complaining we do (myself included) that business and the economy don’t keep pace when things are going really well, we sure clam up when all around us things are “resetting” and we seem to be keeping our even keel reputation. Look around—is there anywhere else you would like to be right now? I, for one, am quite pleased to be saying right now that I live in Winnipeg (though I am always proud to say this). With these economic conditions in mind, we started at the beginning, so to speak, with an article on teaching the next generation about financial responsibility. I can’t stress enough how important it is that our kids learn the value of money at a young age. Knowing how money works will help them get through life better than another hockey practice or soccer game. As my four year old has come to say “cash is king” and in today’s economy of buy now-pay later, cash really has become king once again. For those who have it, opportunities abound. For those who don’t, opportunities will pass by. Let’s make sure we develop another generation of Mr. Pollards who understand that business makes the world go-round, but knowledge about money, integrity, honesty and being genuine keep the wheels greased.

I wanted to update you on my Botox treatment for excessive sweating that I had a year ago and documented in the May/June 2008 issue. Almost everywhere I go someone asks me about it. This treatment has saved me countless shirts and lots of embarrassing wet armpits. With the treatment’s anniversary approaching I have made another appointment for a follow up. As I was sitting at my desk a few weeks ago, I noticed something that I had not felt in a long time—a drip. I made the call, and will soon be dry and comfortable again. So there you have it guys—you can stop asking me if my armpits are dry as I wait in line for my latte! Make the call and get your own hyperhidrosis looked after, because it really does work.

Finally don’t forget to get out and support the Manitoba Moose and show the rest of the world what a great hockey city Winnipeg is. The Moose have been at the top of the league all season, and it looks like a promising year for a chance at the Calder Cup.
