Giuseppe Cianflone, owner of Brava Hair Design for Men, offers a trip back in time for the men who still prefer a classic straight razor shave.
WM: What are some of the advantages of getting a straight razor shave? GC: A straight razor shave helps get rid of ingrown hairs, especially the ones in the neck and collar area. Because it’s a straight blade, it grabs and removes the bits of skin and gets rid of those ingrown hairs. WM: Why do you still do straight razor shaves and how come some men like getting them done? GC: Some people come in and just ask for a shave, but it’s the massage afterwards that makes the difference. The two hot towels, and the scalp and neck massage they get. The guys do it for the relaxation, and maybe for the bragging rights to their wives — they can go home and say, “I went to get a facial today.” And when they come here and get a straight razor shave, they feel like they’re going back in time. Their face just feels so fresh and tingly when it’s done. WM: Do you need to shave in between straight razor shaves? GC: I would recommend that you don’t shave in between, because the longer the whiskers are, the better the shave will be. WM: How long does it take, and how often should you get it done? GC: It usually takes about twenty minutes from start to finish and I have some customers that come by about once a week. Others come by twice a week, and a few come by every day. But a straight razor shave is usually good for at least two days.
